2013 Presidents Cup Winner Steve Grant

A brief history of the President's Cup (formerly Chairman's Cup)

Way back in 2005 our then Chairman Brian Sykes proposed we hold a friendly knockout style competition run allong the lines of the FA Cup with participation voluntary. Fifteen players registered that year and the winner was Andrew Teasdale who beat Kevin Hall by 28 points to 23.

The competition carried on in 2006 with the entry being oversubscribed meaning we needed a preliminary round to reduce the numbers to 16. Once again the competition was very competitive with John Ford coming out victorious after the final at Easingwold Golf Club versus Joe Hammal.

For the 2007 season we altered the competition format by making it a match play competition. The 2007 final was between John Ford and Derek Griffiths, they had a titanic battle in the final played at Mount Oswald Golf Club. After the first four holes Derek was four up but John battled back and they were all square going down the eighteenth. John took the 2007 Cup on the final hole winning by one.

The final of the 2008 Chairman's Cup Knockout competition took place at Mount Oswald Golf Club between defending champion John Ford and Paul Baker. After a hard fought match Paul came out on top winning 5&4 so we have a new champion in Paul Baker.

For 2009 we introduced an entry fee of £5 to pay towards the final at whatever course the two finalists agreed on. This year the final was between Derek Griffiths and Jim Rooks and took place at the very scenic Dunstanbrough Castle Golf Club. As many of you know Dunstanbrough is a beautiful course set right on the edge of the North sea at Embleton Bay and as a links course is very susceptible to the weather. The finals day was bright but quite breezy and therefore was a strict test of any golfers game and on the day It was Jim who took the 2009 Chairman's Cup.

In 2010 the competition changed it's name in deference to our Leader Brian's move up the food chain to President. This years final took place at Linden Hall and was between Rico Liverani and Steve Grant. On paper it should have been a one sided affair but Steve has improved leaps and bounds over the past year and he emerged victorious winning by two.

2011 Winner - Paul Baker

2012 Winner - Rico Liverani

The 2013 Presidents Cup was organised and ran by John Ford, many thanks to him for his efforts. We did intend (and on the best part, managed) to ensure all games were played away from the main Championship rounds but due to outside problems the 2013 final had to be played at Finals day. The final was between Paul Baker and Steve Grant with Steve coming out the victor at Wearside.

2014 Details to follow.
